Two Philips Curling Irons

Two Philips Curling Irons

I don’t like to leave things to chance, but I really don’t have a choice, do I? So I really appreciate the happy coincidences chance sometimes serves up. A couple of months back, while reorganizing my storage area, I discovered I had two Philips curling irons that looked remarkably alike. They were bought on separate occasions, though I can’t recall when or where -one of these days I’m gonna get myself organizized.

The HP 4171 (yellow) has some numbers stamped inside suggesting it dates from 1975, which is certainly in line with its design. And I guess the HP 4170 (green) can’t be too far removed from that date.

I’ve never really understood curling irons, or any other aspect of hair styling, for that matter. It seems such a hopeless struggle to get all those thousands of pliable strands of hair to do exactly what you’d like them to do. To me, hair styling is much like rocket science, as expressed in this earlier Deconstruction. Or magic, if you believe in that kind of thing, as seen in this diptych.
